From Drenthe to Europe
Egbert grew up in Meppel (NL). He started his career as a bus driver at the Drentse Vervoer Maatschappij (DVM) but quickly realized that he wanted to see more than just the local roads. His ambition led him to international transport, where he worked at major sporting events and trade fairs across Europe.
In 2019, Egbert attended an open day at Ebusco in Deurne. His interest in eco-friendly technology and electric vehicles brought him there, without concrete plans to apply for a job. However, things took a different turn. “I approached someone and asked if they needed freelance drivers. Shortly after, I was taking a test drive, and the rest is history,” he says.
Electric buses and sustainability
Ebusco’s mission to produce zero emission buses aligns perfectly with Egbert’s values. “I care a lot about the environment. Electric buses make a difference in the world, and I’m happy to contribute to that,” he says. “It’s amazing to witness the transition from diesel to electric up close. The silence, the smoothness; it’s a completely different experience to drive an electric bus. And you know you’re doing something good for the planet. That’s incredibly motivating.”
Cycling as a sustainable return trip
Egbert’s love for the environment is not only visible in his work but also in how he travels. While his workday ends when the bus is delivered, his love for cycling takes over. Because after delivering a bus, he often takes the bike for the trip back home. “That’s the beauty of freelance work,” he explains. “Delivering buses all over Europe and cycling back home, for me, a fantastic combination! Sometimes I take a few days for it, depending on the distance. I cycle about 100 to 120 kilometers a day and enjoy the landscape along the way.”
This combination of work and sport suits Egbert perfectly. As an endurance athlete and former cyclist, he takes great value in staying fit. “As a bus driver you are constantly seated, which can strain your body. By cycling regularly and eating healthy, I stay in balance.”
Proud of his work
Freelancing at Ebusco fits Egbert’s lifestyle perfectly. He values the freedom and variety. “You meet new people, go to interesting places, and always have a new challenge,” he says. Delivering a new bus is always a highlight. Customers respond enthusiastically and are curious about the performance and battery capacity. “It’s great to show how far the technology has come, especially compared to the diesel buses of the past.”
Although the work is sometimes unpredictable, it provides extra satisfaction. “There are times when certain challenges occur. In those cases, it’s a matter of staying calm, contacting our support department, and finding a solution together,” he says. “It feels good to get the job done, especially when you leave a satisfied customer behind.”
Future perspective
Egbert sees a lot of potential in electric buses and the developments within the transport sector. “The future lies in zero emission. You can see that the technology is advancing rapidly and it’s great to be part of this transition.”
For Egbert, his job is more than just a job. It’s a way to bring together his passions: taking the wheel, contributing to a better environment, and the freedom to explore Europe by bus and bike. “Ebusco suits me because it’s all about sustainability and innovation. That gives me energy and motivation to go out on the road every day.”
